善为士者不武,善战者不想,善胜敌者不与,善用人者为之下。
《老子》第68章
He who in good at being an officer does not boast of his martial prowess;he who is good at fighting does not resort to rage ;he who is skilful at defeating enemies does not wrestle with them ;and he who is skilful at managing his men has a modest attitude toward them.

士:古代文人、武人皆称“士”,这里指武土,一说指将官。王粥生:“土,率 之帅也。”不武:不表现勇武。武,勇猛,勇敢。(诗经 .郑风。羔裘》:“孔武有力。”不想:不会被激怒。不与:不争。与,对付。这里指与敌人作战。为之下:处人之下。为,处,居。之,代指所用的人。

善于带兵的人不尚勇武,善于作战的人不容易被敌人激怒,善于致胜的人不会依靠攻伐,善于用人的人先对人表示谦下。
