甘其食，，美其服，安其居，乐其俗。邻国相望，鸡犬之声相闻，民至老死不相往束。
《老子》第80章
Let the people be contented with their food pleased with their clothing satisfied with their homes，and delight in their plain customs. The neighboring states are within sight of each other, and the crowing of cocks and barking of dogs can be heard by one another. But the people do not have any contact with each other throughout their long lives.

甘:用如使动词。“甘其食”即“使其食甘。”使他们吃好。 下面“美”、“安”、乐”的用法相同。

使老百姓以粗茶淡饭为香甜，以粗布衣服为华美，以简居陋俗为安乐。相邻的国家离得很近，相互望得见，连鸡鸣犬吠也听得到，但老百姓却直到老死彼此不相往来。
