将欲歙之，必固张之;将欲弱之，必固强之;将欲废之，必固兴之:将欲夺之，必固与之。

What is in the end to be contracted, must first be expanded. Whatever is to be weakened ,must begin by being strengthened. What is to be destroyed,must first be promo- ted. He who would be a taker,must begin as a giver.

歙(xi):一本作拿，古通用字。(说文):“敢，缩鼻也。”有收缩义，与“张”相对。固:一本作姑，马叙伦曰:“固，读为姑且之姑。”

要想使其收缩，必先使之扩张;要想削弱它，必先加强它;要相废除它，必先振兴它;要想夺取它，必先给予它。
