故常无欲，以观其妙;常有欲，以观其徼。
《老子)第1章
Therefore ,he who rids himself forever of desire can see the subtleties of the Tao ;he who has never rid himself of desire can see only the superficiality of the Tao.

常无欲:常。原作“恒”，盖为避汉孝文帝刘恒讳。欲:志欲、情欲，包括善愿、爱憎、喜怒，所谓七情六欲皆是也。妙:指天地万物的微妙之处。徼 (jiao):边界，引申为表面。
[译文]
所以如果能保持清静无欲，就可以观察天地万物的微妙之处;如果贪欲太多，就只可以看到天地万物的表面现象。
